My Marching Band

I was in my high school marching band my freshman year. The flag team to be specific. Something about marching around my little town throwing this flag around with these huge brass instruments and massive drums behind really stuck with me. It was pretty much the nerdiest thing you could possibly do at that stage in your life and I kinda loved it. I've wanted to do a shoot in honour of this awkward time in my life for years. Here are some behind the scenes shots from a recent shoot with Aubrey (formerly Ri2K). We shot in the most beautiful 60's style house with an insanely huge manicured english garden. Rows of tree's, perfectly shaped hedges, stone benches, a full tennis court and the owner was the sweetest old man who actually designed the whole place himself. I wanted to move in. On a very rainy Sunday at Columbia Rd. flower market I ran into the back doors of The Royal Oak pub. There was a couple there, the man/boy had just pulled a ring out and she was about to cry. I stood there for an endless second and felt so lucky to have seen that moment.

We just finished our latest Nica Campaign. We shot in the most beautiful summer house, it was actually 3 summer houses in one very big garden. We wanted a vintage summery feel with bright colors and clashing prints. Another hot hot London day, it was great! Thank you to my lovely team!

Mischa Autumn Winter 2011

We've just finished off the Mischa Campaign. We took our inspiration from all the drama and suspense in Hitchcock films. I loved roaming around in the smoke and darkness while I was shooting. It was so dark in one of these shots I had to direct without even seeing the model. Just flashes going off and then pitch black, like some sort of dream sequence. We listened to Link Wray the whole time. Perfect! Thank you to Steph Wilson for styling, Marco Antonio for Hair and Make up, Alex Forsey for lights and smoke, and Caroline Parker for the retouching.

In a perfect world I would wake up every morning and go surfing and then spend my afternoons making music. My reality is that I've got an irrational fear of sharks and my music making abilities haven't come further than the recorder. This is Ben Howard, and he is living this perfect life. He reminds me so much of my friends back home in California. We spent a bizarrely hot afternoon running around an old house in London taking pictures for his new album which should be coming out any day now. Some behind the scenes shots from the last Ri2K campaign I shot a few weeks ago. The entire shoot had a very old school Hollywood feel. The best part of the day was using a smoke machine for the first time. Not sure how I got this far without one. Commissioners beware! I require smoke machines for all my shoots from now on, actually for every day life in general.

As usual, I had the best team. Its by far the best part about Vegas. Its basically where all the Neon signs go once they are retired. Viewing is by appointment only so if your in town you should call ahead to make sure you can go. Adventures in America with a Light Leaking Leica and cheap 1 hour processing

We are traveling across America taking pictures and chasing the sun. Apologies if this blog turns into holiday snaps for a little while. So far we've been through California, Oregon, Nevada, Utah and now Colorado. We are having so much fun! So this is what you get when you spend $3 on film processing. If anyone in Colorado knows of a Leica specialist please let me know! Light leaks loose their charm real fast.

Michael Wojas RIP

I am very sad to hear the news that Colony Rooms barman, Michael Wojas has just passed away. The Colony Rooms had such an amazing atmosphere, walking in there was like walking into another time completely. Hidden away in Soho, always filled with interesting people. Sadly the world is running out of places like this. I've done a few shoots in the Colony, the last one with the lovely Madam, which I've been told is the last ever photoshoot in the club. My favorite memory of Michael was of him walking through the club as I was finishing up a shoot with a young band popping all my balloons with his cigarette and screaming at us to "Get the Fuck Out!!" The boys in the band were absolutely terrified. Here are a few shots of the Colony and Madam.

Paper magazine sent me to to photograph some kids that live in a squat in South London. They live in a huge building that used to be some sort of office. They have fax machines in their bedrooms and fluorescent strip lighting everywhere. They don't have hot water or heat but they seem to have more fun than most people.

Alessi's Ark

I have been working with the very talented and lovely Alessi for a few years now. We went to Eastbourne for the day, rolled around in the grass, ate chips at the seaside, and went to "How We Lived Then", a fantastic museum filled with all the best stuff that you can only find in your grandma's attic. If you're ever in Eastbourne you must check it out! It is such a treat to work with one of your most favorite people. She is quite a talent, you can hear some songs here.

Today I went to the SF Moma and found these two photos on the top floor. I have never heard of Zhang Huan before but now I love him. He paints, he draws, he takes photos, he performs, he makes sculptures, he does installations. He is a busy busy bee and everything he does is beautiful. See his work here.

My Trip to the Faroe Islands

I had the pleasure of spending last weekend with a small group of people in the Faroe Islands. I was there to photograph Teitur who is a charming young man that makes beautiful music. We spent 5 days touring the island, listening to music at the G Festival, taking pictures, looking for puffins and not sleeping because of only 2 hours of darkness. This is my visual diary of the trip:

We have just finished the latest Ad Campaign for Mischa Barton Handbags. This is the third campaign I have shot with her and I think my favorite. Mischa is such a great model, always understanding my strange ideas and making everything look even better than I imagined. We took inspiration from 70's Rock chicks like Marianne Faithful. I had the best team working with me: Styling by Ye Young Kim, Make-Up by Marco Antonio, Hair by Gow Tanaka, and assistance from Simon at Prolighting and Alicia Taylor.

Thank you DPI Magazine! Miss Effie has recently interviewed me about my work and given me an 8 page feature.....Yikes! The magazine is based in Taiwan but it has English translations so people like myself can still read it. The issue is called The Magic Baby Kingdom, Volume 120.
